FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New book Let’s Talk about Race fosters small group discussions about race

So, you want to have honest discussions about race, but aren’t quite sure how.

Author Angela Dion’s Let’s Talk about Race: A Workbook for Safe, Honest and Productive Group Discussions provides all the tools needed for purposeful conversations about race.

“Dion encourages a safe space for friends and neighbors to contribute to the broader discussion about our differences and why they continue to overshadow our similarities,” says Political Science Professor and co-director of The Project on Race, Dr. Stephen Maynard Caliendo.

Former ABC newscaster Doris E. McMillon comments, “Angela Dion opens the door for a sensitive and compelling conversation that addresses the 300 pound ‘race gorilla’ that sits in our living room.”

So if you’ve ever thought: I don’t want to feel like I have to apologize, I don’t want anyone to think I’m racist for having these thoughts, or I don’t want to offend or hurt anyone, Dion provides the instructions for targeted discussions about race. Let’s Talk includes directions for setting group rules, handling conflicts and evaluating and celebrating progress. In addition, the discussion guide section offers ice breakers, a reading with discussion questions and homework.

Dion, who is black, and her husband of 21 years, Marc, who is white, invited some friends over to discuss race in their own home in 2006. Dion wrote Let’s Talk at the suggestion of one of those group members. Dion says, “This book is for anyone else interested in having real conversations about race. I want others to experience life changing interaction as we did.”

Some of the benefits from a Let’s Talk group are: realizing you’re not alone with your struggles with the discussion, having a safe place to talk freely (political correctness is discouraged), hearing other’s experiences, and learning how to interact with other races.
